18 | Sailing the Spectacular Islands of Fiji, Vanua Balavu and Makogai
We sailed Julia upwind to Fiji's remote Lau group, and were rewarded with one of the most spectacular cruising grounds we have ever visited. Vanua Balavu's Bay of Islands is filled with beautiful islets with perfectly calm anchorages and countless coves to explore. It is a dinghy sailing paradise.
After an overnight passage to the seldom visited island of Makogai, we toured an abandoned leprosy quarantine station and a giant clam hatchery. Fiji's natural beauty and welcoming people have impressed us at every encounter.
Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat. She is constructed to the Ingrid design by William Atkin, and was launched in 1960.

17 | Exploring the Islands of Fiji, Vanua Levu and Taveuni
Просмотров 65 тыс.2 месяца назад
After the two week ocean passage to Fiji, we settle in to the little town of Savusavu. The boat needed some repairs after the long crossing, and then we explore the many wonders of Fiji, from waterfalls and sugar cane to chocolate and kava root. Setting sail for Viani Bay, we had a rough upwind bash, but eventually made it on the second try. We found a dive resort with free moorings on Taveuni,...
16 | Voyage across the Central Pacific on a Wooden Boat

After waiting for a weather window, we set sail from French Polynesia for an 1800 nautical mile passage to Fiji. This stretch of ocean is notoriously squally and unpredictable. We experienced variable winds and some significant swell rolling in from systems in the southern ocean. After a successful voyage, we made landfall in the beautiful country of Fiji. Our boat Julia is an Atkin designed In...
15 | Cruising Bora Bora and Taha'a in the Society Islands
Просмотров 155 тыс.6 месяцев назад
We continued sailing westward through the Society Islands. In peaceful Taha'a we rode the tidal currents over a beautiful coral reef. A perfect crossing under full sail brought us to Bora Bora, where we swam with sharks and rays before climbing the central mountain to take in the spectacular views of the island and it's barrier reef. As the days on our traveler's visa became scarce, we checked ...

We left the Tuomotus on a 240 nautical mile passage to Mo'orea in the Society Islands. These islands are like a geologic combination of the towering Marquesas and the coral ribbons of the Tuomotus. After a brief visit to Tahiti to pick up additional crew, we explored the ancient ruins and towering views of Mo'orea before another 80 mile passage to the lush island of Huahine. Our vessel Julia is...

Though the Marquesas Islands had captivated us with their beauty, it was time to set sail on the 500 nautical mile passage to the Tuomotus. When we arrived we found islands that were different from the Marquesas in nearly every way. Turquoise lagoons lined by white sand beaches awaited us, and we found beautiful coral reefs surrounding the palm fringed islets. Julia is a traditional wooden boat...

Our wildest cruising dreams have been realized as we sail our wooden Ingrid Ketch to the Bay of Virgins in Fatu Hiva. This spectacular island has to be one of the most beautiful in the entire world. Far off the beaten path, the people of Fatu Hiva live peaceful lives on their garden island. We were welcomed into thier homes, enjoying the local cuisine and even helping to harvest fruit from a ju...

We cruised our classic wooden sailboat Julia to many spectacular anchorages on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. This is south pacific sailing as we have always dreamed it would be. The spectacular green scenery of the Marquesas has overwhelmed us with soaring cliffs, beautiful beaches, and swaying palm trees. Julia is an Ingrid Ketch, designed by William Atkin and built in 1960. She is a traditionally bu...

We set sail on an ocean passage from Mazatlan, Mexico to Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Sailing across an ocean has been a long-held dream for us, but we were not planning on extending this cruise so far from home. But, we realized that if we were serious about bluewater cruising, the time was right. We decided to take the leap and sail 2800 nautical miles across the open ocean, reaching t...

We continued our voyage up the Gulf of California, stopping at the beautiful crescent shaped harbor on Isla San Francisco before sailing north to Puerto Escondido and the Loreto National Marine Park. I just noticed what looks like your mainsheet traveler is just a metal bar that the block attaches to with a shackle. Is that common for Ingrid's or boats of that era? Seems like it would limit the positions your boom can be set to. Do you have any problems with it?

I learned to sail about 40 years ago out of Dana Point Harbor in South Orange County, Calif. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. On one outing, we were becalmed about 15 miles from the harbor. Then, while sitting at the helm hoping for some wind, a California grey whale passed within 40ft from the transom. It's hard to imagine their size until you get that close. I'm nearly 80 years old now and living in on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, so I've not sailed in many years. But I have the memories. Thank you for reminding me of those wonderful memories.
